The first two works were commissioned by New Radio and Performing Arts for syndicated broadcast nationally as part of the New American Radio series made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and produced at Sonami Studios in Oakland, California. Manananggal was first developed as a stage work by the artists with a commission from STEIM in Amsterdam.
